EXPERTISE

Expertise General Terms Testimonials

My primary area of expertise is Cold Fusion. I have been doing web development in Cold Fusion for about 5 years now, and have developed a fairly broad range of database driven applications. The applications are listed on my resume page.

My database experience is with Microsoft Access, Microsoft SQL Server, and briefly, Informix. It isn't that I am against using other databases, it is simply that these are the tools I have had an opportunity to work with. I have found them all to be fairly usable for web development, although SQL Server is far more robust than Access for large-scale databases. Informix is much less common (and very expensive). Access is suitable for smaller jobs, but Cold Fusion experts say it should never be used for an Internet application. My feeling is that it depends on the application.

I have a modest amount of experience with Javascript, but my usage increases with every web site I develop. I still have a long way to go before I would ever be a Javascript expert, but my web sites are increasingly peppered with Javascripts that are at least 90% authored by yours truly. However, I try not to rely on Javascript for really important functions, because some users have browsers that do not support Javascript, and others have disabled Javascript for security reasons.

I have only done a little bit of Macromedia Flash development, and that was because I only had 30 days on the demo version. Eventually, I will buy Flash and start using it in my applications, where appropriate.

Generally, when I need a particular skill to complete a web site, I develop the skill during the process of developing the site. Then I add it to my overall fund of expertise. Just like anyone else. :)
