BACKGROUND
|
I have been a web designer/developer since 1993. I started with HTML, then started fooling around with animated GIFs, and in the process developed a web site called R.I.P DFS.
The R.I.P DFS site was a memorial to the Navy's DFS (Dynamic Flight Simulator) in Warminster, PA, which was slated for closure by the Base Realignment and Closure Committee in 1991. R.I.P. DFS became defunct when the facility was closed. However, in a fit of sentimentality, I saved some of the pages, and the other day while sifting through them I came across a nifty little bit of GIF animation I created for the site. It's a bit low-res, but CPU speed, memory, and bandwidth were all a lot smaller in those days. (See DFS Animation.)
The whole R.I.P DFS site was pretty primitive by today's standards, but it set me on the road toward full-fledged web development. When the DFS facility finally closed at the end of FY 1996, I escaped barely a month earlier by accepting a position as a web developer at a local software firm. It was there that I was introduced to Cold Fusion. It turned out that I really, really enjoyed Cold Fusion development. And there were databases...fun, fun. (No, really. I love doing this stuff.)
Less than five years later, what with the handwriting on the wall (downsizing, being bought out by a larger, bottom-line oriented company, contracting out my work, etc.) I once again escaped. This time I was working for an actual Web Development Company. It was great, while it lasted. Working at home full-time, telecommuting, dressing for work in jeans and T-shirts - and the pay was good. Then the "it's not a recession" hit, and I decided to go solo.
That's it in a nutshell. I've left out a lot of detail, some of which is summed up below. I've omitted most of the parts that have nothing to do with web development.
